Australia has been ravaged by the worst wildfires ever experienced, with large swaths of the country devastated since the fires began in July 2019. As the smoke still lingers amid the blackened earth in New South Wales' bushfire-ravaged communities, the emergence of new growth has sparked much needed joy for residents and has already created a new symbol of hope for Australians nationwide.
A Rural Fire Service crew recently spotted a bright splash of colour among the charred remains. It was a Christmas bell flower blooming near Lake Cathie, south of Port Macquarie. A fire which had burned for more than two weeks in the area, destroyed thousands of hectares and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of koalas, and many other species of animals and birds. The orange and yellow bell-shaped petals, sensitively set against a backdrop of scorched earth, holds promise of new life and of hope. Greenery will return to the land. Rachel has used the Christmas bell, Bladfordia nobilis — a protected species, in this new numbered edition design which will raise funds for WIRES – an Australian wildlife rescue organisation.
WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same. WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.) has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for over 30 years and is the largest wildlife rescue organisation in Australia.
